Christie Hegermiller joins Civil & Environmental Engineering from Sofar Ocean, where she worked as a senior research scientist to develop a global operational wave forecast built on observations from a network of small wave buoys.

Hegermiller researches environmental fluid mechanics in the coastal ocean, including wave-mediated interactions between the atmosphere and ocean and wave-driven sediment transport and coastal flooding. She seeks to understand coastal processes over a range of timescales from storms to climate change and over a range of space scales from local beaches to continental coastlines. She received the United States Geological Survey Mendenhall Postdoctoral Research Fellowship and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Postdoctoral Scholarship. Hegermiller brings her experiences in and collaborations across academic, government and industry science to her work at the UW.
